Cymbidium atropurpureum Lindl. is a rather large epiphytic species. However, the plant is not as epiphytic as its relatives such as C. finlaysonianum and C. aloifolium. It is evident in its less number of aegotropic roots (acute upright roots) and its different in-vitro seed germination pattern.

Colour of flowers can be variable from different local areas. The population from the easten distribution area are mostly reddish in colour, whereas those from western areas are greenish brown in colour.
Flowering Period : March to May in habitat, January in cultivation in Bangkok.
Distribution & Habitat : Found on large tree trunks and rocks in partially shade locations of low land evergreen forests, usually near riverines. Plants can be found from 0-2200 metres above sea level in Hainan, southern Vietnam, southern Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, western Java and southern Philippines.
