Cymbidium insigne Rolfe is probably the most important building block in cymbidium hybridization. Smile The most stiking quality is its tall erect inflorescence with numerous clean-coloured flowers. Leaves are narrow which yields a fine foliage appearance.

At present, this species is divided into two subspecies,

1) Cym. insigne subsp. insigne, occurs in Vietnam, Laos, and Hainan.

2) Cym. insigne subsp. seidenfadendii, occurs in Thailand.

Pictures shown in this article are of Cym. insigne subsp. seidenfadenii which are found only in Thailand. This subspecies tends to be smaller in flower and plant size with earlier blooming habit than subspecies insigne.

Flowering Period: Usually, subsp. seidenfadenii starts blooming in October and finishes in March, whereas subsp. insigne starts from December and finishes in April. However the population in southern proves to be a little earlier.

Distribution & Habitat: Occurs in lower montane scrub forests with broken or open shade at elevations of 1000 to 1700 metres in northeastern Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Hainan.
