Grammatophyllum speciosum

Grammatophyllum speciosum Blume is the world largest orchid species. While other members of the Genus Grammatophyllum have their stems compressed into pseudobulbs, Gram. speciosum has elongated stems. This makes the plant look like a sugarcane plant. With upright inflorescence taller than 1 metre, plants in bloom always become spectacular.

Because of low maintenance and ability to withstand full sun, Gram. speciosum is suitable to grow as a landscape plant in the tropics. With its high heat tolerance, this species will be another genetic source to develop heat tolerant cymbidiums (HTCs) with long lasting bloom.

Flowering Period : May to November

Distribution & Habitat : Occurs primarily on tall trees and sometimes on rocks in tropical evergreen rain forests at elevation from 0-1200 metres in southern Burma, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, Java, New Guinea, the Philippines and Solomon Islands.
